Alexandros Papagos (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Παπάγος) was a Greek army officer who led the Hellenic Army in World War II and the later stages of the subsequent Greek Civil War. Prime Minister of Greece 19 November 1952 – 4 October 1955. He was the only Greek career officer to rise to the rank of Field Marshal. He died in office of gastric problems and a lung haemorrhage. After his lying in state in the Cathedral of Athens since 5th October, his funeral took place on 7th October 1955 with military honours, concluding at the 1st Cemetery of Athens, in the presence of the Royal Family, government representatives and a huge crowd of ordinary citizens.
