Aliki

In memoriam
Actress, Singer. She was a leading star of Greek movies, predominantly musicals, for close to 30 years. Raised in Athens, she began her theatre career while in school, and studied at the National Theatre of Greece. Initially working in commercials, she made her silver screen bow with the 1953 "Nikos Tsiforos", and was soon much in demand for films, stage, and television. Fluent in English and French, she was well acclaimed as Eliza Doolittle in a late 1950s production of Shaw's "Pygmalion". Aliki received the Greek Cinema Festival award as best female performer in 1960 for "Mantalena". She had a major hit with "I Aliki sto Naftiko", but an attempt to market it internationally failed; she was honored as "National Star of Greece" in 1970, and that same year produced her biggest selling film, "Ypolohagos Natassa". She continued acting following the 1974 break-up of her marriage to her frequent co-star Dimitris Papamichail, but left films in 1981 to concentrate on the stage, receiving excellent reviews for her portrayal of Eva Peron in "Evita". Aliki died of pancreatic cancer, leaving a large recorded legacy of popular music which remains available on CD. Her birth year is sometimes given as 1933. In 2008, her son published a biography of her that was made into a television series; the show was, however, considered to be in poor taste, and flopped. Of her philosophy of fame, Aliki said: "Glory! What is glory, really? It is just stress, and nothing more...".
