RANK Private. SERVICE NUMBER 6746 BATTALION 13th Battalion. REGIMENT Manchester Regiment. DATE AND PLACE ENLISTED Ashton-u-Lyne in 1914. DATE FIRST SERVED IN THEATRE OF WAR 30th August 1914 in France. KILLED IN ACTION Aged 38 PLACE OF DEATH Lake Dojran, Greek Macedonia. INFORMATION ABOUT SERVICE Ambrose was initially assigned to the 2nd Battalion Manchester Regiment who were in action in France from August 1914. He transferred to the 13th Battalion who had landed in France in September 1915. In October that same year they moved to Salonika in Greece. INFORMATION ABOUT REGIMENT The 13th Battalion Manchester Regiment were part of the 66th Brigade in the 22nd Division. They served in France and Greece. EVENTS LEADING TO DEATH On 24th and 25th April 1917 the 22nd Division was engaged in the Battale of Dojran. On the night of 24th April, twelve companies attacked the positions of the Bulgarian 2nd Brigade and managed to take the points Nerezov, Knyaz Boris and Pazardzhik, but by 8pm and with heavy casualties after a Bulgarian counter attack, the British retreated. These actions, in which Ambrose was killed, took place close to Lake Dojran, in Greek Macedonia. WAR MEMORIALS LISTINGS Stalybridge War Memorial, Trinity Street, Stalybridge. DATE OF MARRIAGE 1916. PLACE OF MARRIAGE Grimsby, Lincolnshire. NAMES OF SPOUSE Lilian Skelton Woods. NAME(S) OF CHILDREN None. OTHER SUPPORTING FAMILY DOCUMENTATION On his enlistment papers Ambroses place of birth is given as St Michaels Mossley. The only parishes in the area with a St Michaels ward were Mottram and Ashton-u-Lyne. Ambrose lived in lodgings in Stalybridge for most of his early life and his place of birth is consistently given as Stalybridge. Ambrose and his wife made their home in Lincolnshire for the short time they had together after their marriage. Lilian was born in Grimsby and the Manchester Regiment had links with the area. Lilian was resident at 24 Wardell Street, Cleethorpes when Ambrose was killed. She remained a widow and died at 2 Warwick House, Hilda Street, Grimsby, aged 82, on 10th March 1973. She is buried alone at plot AA 239051, in Cleethorpes Cemetery, Lincolnshire. Father James died in Stalybridge, aged 58, in 1892. Mother Catherine died in Stalybridge, aged 39, in 1883, shortly after giving birth to Ambroses brother Luke who died a few months later. Brother John married Ellen Mahon in 1887, in a registrar attended wedding in Ashton-u-Lyne. He joined the army in 1890 and served for a time with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He died in Ashton Town, aged 34, in 1902. Brother James Henry died in Ashton-u-Lyne, aged 53, in June 1923. He is buried in the reserved (St Peters) Catholic section of St Pauls Churchyard Stalybridge. This cemetery has been grassed over and no headstones remain. He was still single in 1911 and it is unlikely that he ever married.
