In memoriam

During World War II, Furlan worked as a speaker on Radio London, He served as a minister in the Tito–Šubašić coalition government. In 1947, he was convicted by the Yugoslav Communist authorities at the show trial known as the "Nagode Trial" and sentenced to death (later commuted to 20 years forced labor). A central accusation regarded his translation of George Orwell's novel "Animal Farm." He was released on parole, but continued to suffer from intimidation and physical attacks from the Yugoslav police. In November 1953 he was nearly beaten to death in an attack by Yugoslav secret police agents. Note: The gravestone reads "June 16th" but Furlan died on June 10th; his death was already reported in newspapers before June 16th (e.g., (Slovenski poročevalec, 12 June 1957, p. 7).
