GUNNER CHARLES WILLIAM SHORTHOSE Service Number: 94346 Royal Field Artillery 29th Div. Ammunition Col. Died 23 October 1915 Age 19 years old Buried or commemorated at MIKRA MEMORIAL, Greece Son of Martha Shorthose, of 128, Blackpool St., Burton-on-Trent, and the late Samuel Shorthose. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Charles William Shorthose was born in Burton, Staffordshire, the 1911 census records he is 14 years old and training to be a Blacksmith residing with his father Samuel and Iron Foundry worker, mother Martha five brothers and two sisters at 80 Beech Street, Stoke on Trent. Attesting for the Royal Field Artillery at Burton, he first served in the Balkans from 24th August 1915 with 29th Division Ammunition Column. Charles was lost aboard the Transport Ship  Marquette  when she was torpedoed by a German submarine on a journey from Alexandria to Salonika on 23rd October 1915. The ship was hit on the starboard side by a single torpedo as she entered the Gulf of Salonika and sank in ten minutes. A total of 29 crew, and 128 soldiers were lost, there were also 10 nurses and 23 Medical staff from New Zealand who were also lost. Charles was 19 years old and is commemorated on the Mikra Memorial, Greece, the son of Martha Shorthose and the late Samuel Shorthose of 128 Blackpool Street, Burton on Trent. A brother 10827 Lance Sergeant Gilbert Orlando Shorthose, DCM, 1/5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders was killed in action, France 28th July 1918.
