About the cemetery

The annexation of Bucovina by the Habsburg Empire in 1775 marks the beginning of a new era for this territory. The name Bucovina originates in that period and comes from the name of the beech (tree) (in German - Buche, in Slavic - buk). Thus, the Upper Land of Moldova became the Buchenwald - Land of the Beech Forests - under the Habsburg rule. Prospecting the salt deposits in Cacica by the Austrians and the mining decision turned the surroundings of the saltwater springs into poles of attraction. The salt mine attracted foreign populations which were looking for a better living standard, but also some Romanians in Moldova and Transylvania. This is also largely due to the advantages newcomers received: lower taxes, less statute labour days, a piece of land exempt from taxes in the first years, and the right to use forest land for free in order to build houses.When the works were started i
