Cathedral of Pécs
📍 Pécs, Pécsi járás, Hungary
⛪ Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul – Pécs, Hungary The Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul has been a defining element of the cityscape of Pécs for centuries and stands as one of Hungary’s most significant ecclesiastical monuments. After a devastating fire in 1064 destroyed the original Romanesque basilica, construction of a new cathedral was initiated on the same site by Peter Orseolo, King of Hungary. Completed in the 12th century, the cathedral became renowned for its Romanesque stone carvings, considered exceptional examples of medieval artistic craftsmanship. During the 16th century, following the Ottoman conquest, the cathedral was converted into a mosque. After Hungarian forces regained control of Pécs in 1686, the building was once again adapted for Christian worship, undergoing several architectural modifications over time. Between 1806 and 1813, the cathedral was remodeled in the Gothic Revival style by the prominent Hungarian architect Mihály Pollack. However, this renovation did not resolve underlying structural issues caused by centuries of alterations. By the late 19th century, the building required urgent restoration. From 1882 to 1891, architect Friedrich von Schmidt led a major restoration project that effectively rebuilt the cathedral from its foundations, giving it the neo-Romanesque appearance seen today. In 1990, a visit by Pope John Paul II renewed international attention on the cathedral, highlighting its historical, architectural, and spiritual significance. Today, the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Peter and Saint Paul remains a powerful symbol of Pécs’s rich cultural heritage and a landmark of European religious architecture.
