Sajmiste Concentration Camp Memorial

Sajmiste Concentration Camp Memorial

📍 Београд, Serbia

Also known as Zemen Camp/Semlin Judenlager. In the fall on 1941, the Germans occupying Yugoslavia established a Concentration Camp on the grounds of a former fairground known as Zemun/Sajmiste, outside Belgrade. It was located on the left bank of Sava river, and was then under the control of Independent State of Croatia. Croatian authorities collaborated with the Germans to establish this camp. The majority of Serbian Jews were killed here. Most Jews from Kosovo (Kosovska Mitrovica) were deported here to be murdered. 8,000 Jews, mostly women, children, and the elderly were interned there. Between March and May, 1942, 6,000 Jews were killed at Sajmiste using gas vans. Another 1,200 Jews died there of exposure and starvation.

📍 Београд, Serbia

The New Cemetery (Serbian: Ново гробље, Novo groblje) is a cemetery complex in Belgrade, Serbia, with a distinct history. It is located in Ruzveltova street in Zvezdara municipality. The cemetery was built in 1886 as the third Christian cemetery in Belgrade and as the first architecturally and urbanistically planned cemetery in Serbia. In addition to graves of ordinary citizens, the cemetery complex also includes special sections: military graves from Serbian-Ottoman War (1876–1877), Serbo-Bulgarian War, Balkan Wars and World Wars, the Alley of the Greats and the Alley of Distinguished Citizens, where some of the most important persons in the history of Serbia are buried. Two Jewish cemeteries (a Sephardic and an Ashkenazi one) are located adjacent to the New Cemetery, but are administrated separately.

New Public Cemetery (Hungarian: Új köztemető or Rákoskeresztúri sírkert) is the largest cemetery in Budapest and one of the largest in Europe with an area of about 2.07 km2 and 3 million burials since its opening in 1886. It is adjacent to the Kozma Street Cemetery; the largest Jewish cemetery in Hungary. Its main building, which was constructed in 1903, has a 26-meter-high bell tower. In addition to its rich vegetation and wide avenues, the cemetery is famous for plot 301, where the martyrs of the 1956 revolution were buried.
