In memoriam

Bosnian author and writer. Born on December 30, 1895, in Mostar, he received his education, both primary and secondary, in his hometown. Following the Sarajevo assassination in 1914, he faced arrest and subsequent internment in Hungary (Komarovo), before being mobilized into the Austrian army in 1915. Throughout the war, he served as a scribe and interpreter in a Vienna hospital until its conclusion. Post-war, he returned to Mostar, completed his studies, and pursued art history, studying in Zagreb, Vienna, and Belgrade. In Zagreb, he mingled with emerging poets like Antun Branko Šimić, Ulderik Donadini, and Niko Milićević, becoming enamored with the expressionist movement. His literary debut came in 1919 with the publication of his first collection of poems, "Inner Life." Over the years, he released several works, including novels like "Grozdana's Laughter" (1927), "The Building on the Ruins" (1939), and "Adam Čabrić" (1947), which explored the intricacies of Bosniak life, intertwining folklore and Slavic-Bogomil myths. Notably, his literary contributions extended beyond novels to encompass poems, prose poems, short stories, essays, and dramatic texts, published in various magazines and newspapers across the region. He was notably active in editorial roles, serving as editor of publications like Zabavnik and Gajret, and later as a journalist for Politike. Throughout his life, he received numerous accolades for his literary endeavors, including the Award of the Serbian Academy of Sciences in Belgrade and the Twenty-Seventh of July Award of the SR BiH. He passed away in Sarajevo on January 19, 1970, leaving behind a rich legacy of literary achievements.
