LIEUTENANT COLONEL J. C. MANNERS. DSO. ROYAL MARINES NO.40 COMMANDO 3RD JUNE 1944 AGE 28
Rank: Lieutenant Colonel Known as: Pops Unit: 40RM Commando Corps: Royal Marines Service: Royal Navy Honours & Awards: Distinguished Service Order, Croix de Guerre. Age: 28 years old James was the son of Herbert Cecil and Dorothy Manners. He was the husband of Pamela Honor Manners, of Vaucluse, New South Wales, Australia, who he married in London in 1942. James Calvert Manners had been Commanding Officer of 40 RM Commando since just after the Dieppe raid in August 1942. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Order (DSO), this being announced in the London Gazette Supplement 36367 Pg. 687 on the 8th February 1944. The citation stated: Captain (Acting Lieutenant Colonel) James Calvert Manners, Royal Marines. 'For gallant and distinguished services in operations leading to the capture of Termoli'. Lieutenant Colonel Manners died during operations on the enemy held island of Brac, in Yugoslavia. He is commemorated at Shanklin Chine on the Isle of Wight by a plaque on a wooden bench to the right of 40 Commando Royal Marines Memorial.
