Son of Viktor Lichtenberg (1837-1915) and Frančiška Belec/Belč (1848-1910). Born at Praproče pri Grosupljem, died at Bevke. For the plaque in Bevke, see: Karol Lichtenberg . Karol Lichtenberg was the cousin of Count Lichtenberg of Auersperg, and for some time he lived at Jezero near Podpeč, where the Auerspergs had a manor farm. With his wife Jožefa Saksida, the family had eight children born between 1918 and 1932: Petronela (b. 1918), Marjan, Herbert, Ida (b. 1924), Wanda (b. 1926), Jožica (b. 1928), Nada (b. 1930), and Vera (b. 1932). The family moved to Bevke no. 68 some time before 1930 after the lawyer Ivan Tavčar offered Karol custodianship of his property in Bevke and Count Auersperg sold his property in Jezero. The property was known as "Pri Grofu" (‘the count's place'), but was a small one-bedroom house one kilometer from the village in a marshy meadow near the Ljubljanica River. Karol was in poor health; the family made a living hunting, fishing, and working rented fields. The brothers Marjan and Herbert were forced to assist Partisan saboteurs escape after the attack on the Preserje bridge on 4 December 1941, but they later cooperated with the Italian authorities in the investigation. The brothers were then sent to an Italian concentration camp. As revenge, a group of Partisans attacked the Lichtenberg house on 24 December 1941, wounding the daughter Vera, but were fought off by Karol. The Partisans returned to the house on 23 May 1942 with orders to kill all family members age 14 and older. Wanda, age 16, hid under the bed and was able to describe the attack in 1995. Ida was shot first, then Petronela, and then the parents, Jožefa and Karol. The Partisans then ate the family's food and looted the house. Ida and Jožefa were killed outright, and Petronela and Karol died later in the hospital. At the end of the war, the surviving children were living in Gorizia. Vera, Nada, and Marjan emigrated to Australia, Jožica to Peru, and Herbert to Argentina, and Wanda remained in Gorizia. Summarized from "Poboj Lichtenbergove družine." Zaveza 51 (4 May 2010).
