Casualty of the Great War, Arthur served with the 4th Bn.The Rifle Brigade;Service No: 9909. He enlisted at Stratford, East London. He was lost at sea in the sinking of the Fleet Messenger 'Princess Alberta'. The ship struck a mine near Mudros on the island of Lemnos in the Aegean Sea. He left a widow,Rhoda Ethel Monkman [nee Willis] of 225 Peabody Buildings, Hackney Rd., London. Births Dec 1878 MONKMAN Arthur Alfred R Shoreditch 1c 168 Marriages Jun 1910 MONKMAN Arthur Alfred R Shoreditch 1c 91 WILLIS Rhoda Ethel Shoreditch 1c 91 April 2nd 1910 at the parish church of St Augustine, Haggerston. At this time, Arthur was a Carman and the couple lived at 55 Whiston Street. Rhoda lost three brothers in the Great War- Robert Willis Harry Willis Middleton Willis
