Walter was one of four children born to Fleming Allison and Lucy Jane Allison (nee Brown). His siblings were Thomas Robinson Allison (1904-1995), Lilian Mary Allison (1906-1993) and Rose Elizabeth Allison (1909-1984). His mother was born Lucy Jane Brown in St Pancras, London in England on 19th May 1869 to parents Thomas Brown and Sarah Brown (nee Craddock). His father was born in April 1862 in Auckland, Durham in England.
