In memoriam
Miltiadis Evert (Greek: Μιλτιάδης Έβερτ) Greek politician, a Member of Parliament, Government minister, and ex-chairman of the New Democracy party. Evert was born in Athens, Greece, the son of the Athens police chief Angelos Evert. The Ewert family is of Bavarian origin, one of the families that settled in Athens during the reign of King Otto in the early 19th century. His father, Angelos Evert, was chief of police during the Nazi occupation of Greece in World War II and was credited for saving many Jews and resistance fighters from Gestapo persecution. He studied at the Athens School of Economics and Business Science. He served as the Mayor of Athens from 1 January 1987 to 14 May 1989, and he was Chairman of New Democracy from 1993 to 1997. He also served many times as minister. As Mayor of Athens in 1987, Evert was the first to exercise the legal possibility of opposition radio broadcasting in Greece since all radio stations (including television networks) were a state monopoly. He helped launch Athena 98.4 FM, the first private radio station to begin broadcasting legally in Greece. He was married to photographer Lisa Vanderpool, daughter of American archaeologist Eugene Vanderpool , and they had two daughters. His funeral, with public honours as befitting a man of his stature, took place on 12th February 2011 at Athens First Cemetery and was attended by his family, political dignitaries and a large crowd of mourners from the public. ∼ ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Miltiades Evert, a Conservative former opposition leader and Athens mayor, died in a hospital in the Greek capital Wednesday. He was 71. Officials say Evert had been treated for weeks in intensive care for breathing problems. His death was announced in Parliament by Health Minister Andreas Loverdos. Evert was chairman of Greece's New Democracy party from 1993 until its fall from power in 1997. He held a number of Cabinet positions — including the finance portfolio. An economist and animal lover who kept several dogs and a pet monkey, Evert was first elected to Parliament in 1974, after the collapse of the 1967-74 military dictatorship. He served as mayor of Athens from 1987-1989, founding Greece's first municipal radio station. Evert is survived by his widow, photographer Liza Evert, and their two daughters. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
