In memoriam
Painter. Pavle "Paja" Jovanović gained recognition as a prolific Serbian realist painter, painting over 1,100 paintings during his career. After studying locally in his native Vršac, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Master School for Historical Painting. He painted people going about their daily routines and traveling through Yugoslavia before going to Italy, Spain, Morocco, Egypt, the Caucasus, and the Balkans. His painting at Expo 1900 Paris demonstrated his technical skill, meticulous historical research, and ability to capture the grandeur of a historic moment. At the turn of the 20th century, he became a successful portrait painter. Among the dignities, he painted Montenegrin Prince Nikola Petrović in 1903 and the lavish portrait of Queen Marija Karađorđević in her national attire. He painted Emperor Franz Joseph I of Austria over fourteen times. He is considered one of Serbia's greatest "Orientalists". His most significant works are: "The Wounded Montenegrin" in 1882, "Decorating of the Bride" in 1886, and "Migration of the Serbs" in 1896. Pieces of his collection were lost or destroyed during wars. He lived in Munich, London, Paris, Belgrade, and Vienna for the longest time. Including Serbia's National Museum, his paintings are displayed on the walls of museums worldwide and in private collections. He married his model, Hermina Muni Dauber. He died from the complications of aging at 98.
