In memoriam
Private Thomas Harman (known as Tommy or Tom) was born in Over Wallop, Hampshire on 6th May 1897 to George William Harman and his wife Kate (née Pepler). The couple's first two children had both died young in 1890 and Tom's arrival was followed by a sister (Maggie in 1904) and, much later, a brother (Dennis in 1908). Tom was baptised in St Peter's church, Over Wallop on 6th June 1897. Tom enlisted in Andover, joining the 12th (Service) Bn, the Royal Hampshire Regiment. It is thought within the family that he lied about his age. If he joined up at the outbreak of war (the 12th Bn was formed in October 1914) he would have been 17 at the time. The 12th Bn served almost exclusively in Macedonia. The local paper, the Andover Advertiser, reported (in September 1916) that Tom had been wounded from which, presumably, he recovered. In January 1917, the same paper reported that his parents, of Moulands Cottages, had been informed of the death of their son "who fell fighting for his country in the neighbourhood of Salonika". In his will, Tom Harman left the whole of his property and effects to his mother. He was awarded the Victory and British Medals and is commemorated on the village War Memorial in Over Wallop, Hampshire. He was 19 at the time of his death.
