Thomas Louis Grenet Stewart

In memoriam

Thomas Louis Grenet Stewart was born on the 2nd August 1887, son of Matthew, a Manufacturer, and E. Pamela Stewart of Levern House Barrhead, Glasgow. He was educated at Barrhead and then Hutchesons' Grammar School in Glasgow. Stewart enrolled at the University of Glasgow in 1904 to study Medicine, graduating MB ChB in 1911. He moved to Liverpool, serving as a Resident in Birkenhead at the Borough Hospital, and held appointments at the Grafton Street Fever Hospital and Parkhill Sanatorium. Thomas enlisted with the Royal Army Medical Corps on the 7th August 1914, serving at the Royal Naval Sick Quarters at Shotley, Suffolk, for several months before being transferred to the Royal Naval Division at Walmer, Kent, and promoted to Surgeon Captain. He was posted to the Dardanelles in February 1915 with the 1st Royal Naval Brigade, serving as a Sanitary Medical Officer at the Headquarters of the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force. He sustained a head wound at Gallipolion on the 3rd June 1915, dying one day later aboard the Hospital Ship Ascania, aged 27. Surgeon Captain Thomas Louis Grenet Stewart is buried at East Mudros Military Cemetery in the village of Mudros on the island of Lemnos, Greece. His brother, 2nd Lt. William Marshall Stewart, Was killed in action on 24 March 1917 at Blangy, near Arras, France. Info provided by Matt Drennan 48434933.
