In memoriam

Service Number ~ 21717 Unit ~ New Zealand Army Service Corps Occupation on Enlistment ~ Lorry Driver Son of Edwin Herbert and Dora Lilian Mosen, of Raetiki, Wellington, NZ Walter was working for the Public Works Dept in Opotiki when he enlisted for the army. On 14th April 1941 south of Servia in Greece, a NZ supply convoy was sent out to collect ammunition from a field supply depot for delivery to Australians on the Servia front. During a German aircraft attack, the convoy drivers left their lorries and took cover off the road. After the raid, Wally was the first to get to his feet and return to his lorry. A German fighter-bomber, following in the wake of the main wave, came up the valley, strafing. Wally, who was one of the most popular drivers in B Section, was killed by an explosive bullet.
