4128 Private Wilfred Lawson Orchard The Cameron Highlanders. 2nd Battalion. Aged 36. Brother of Mrs. McAllen, of 247, Manor Farm Rd., Bitterne Park, Southampton. Daisy May Orchard married William T. McAllen at Southampton in 1903 Son of Charles Orchard and Margaret Orchard, formerly Byrne. They were married on 2 January 1872, at The Church of the Three Patrons, Rathgar, Dublin. Charles Orchard, aged 33, son of George Orchard, a Labourer, was then a Soldier based at Portobello Barracks, Rathmines, Dublin. Margaret Byrne, aged 20, daughter of Peter Byrne, a Farmer, was then a Servant, living at 26 Harold's Cross Road. The 4 Orchard brothers died in World War 1. Private Charles George Orchard b. 1876 Stoker Andrew Thomas Orchard b. 1878 Private Wilfred Lawson Orchard b. 1882 Private Alfred Henry Orchard b. 1885 He became a pupil at The Royal Hibernian Military School, Phoenix Park, Dublin, where upon completion of his primary education he joined the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders at Dublin in 1896/7. He subsequently served in India where he was recorded in the 1911 census at Bangalore. He was then a Lance Corporal. He was sent to France in Late December 1914, and took part in the Second Battle of Ypres (22 April 1915 - 25 May 1915) at St. Eloi, south of Ypres. His unit was then transferred to Salonika, [now Thessaloniki] Greece, in December 1915. This was part of an alternative strategy following the debacle at Gallipoli., to attack Bulgarian and Turkish forces in South East Europe. It was unsuccessful, due to inadequate equipment and disease. William died at the 50th General Hospital, Salonika, most likely from Malaria His name is included on the supplementary list of The Royal Hibernian Military School War Memorial
