13502 Lance Sergeant William Ernest Hayes, Died of Wounds received in action, on the 27th.October 1916 while serving with the 7th.Battalion, The Royal Berkshire Regiment. Son of William & Ellen Hayes and brother to Hilda, Charles, Maud, Edith, Ethel and Thomas. Husband of Edith Annie (b.23-7-1887) and father to Edith Maud (b.19-2-1907), Florence Hilda (b.6-9-1908) and Ethel May (18-5-1913). Shortly after William's death, Edith was admitted to the Hackney Union Infirmary and Mrs Ellen Hayes, William's mother, became the children's Guardian and they lived at 323 Dale St., Chatham, Kent. On Edith's recovery the children were reunited with their mother and they lived at 96 Spencer's Road, Stoke Newington. William was born and educated in Clerkenwell and in the 1st.Qtr.of 1907, William married Edith Annie Knatchbull in Islington. In the Census of 1911, the family are living at 40 Milton Road, Stoke Newington, William was employed as a packer in an Oil Refinery, Edith was 23, daughters Edith Maud 4, Florence Hilda 2 and Ethell May was 3 months old. Also living with the family were two of Edith's sisters Nellie Knatchbull (19) employed as a 'Ironer' and Jane Knatchbull (14) working as a 'Finisher'. William is mentioned in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, London Edition Vol.4.as enlisting in September 1914, initially into The Royal Fusiliers (City of London Regiment)? but soon found himself with 7th.Btn. of the Berkshires. Following William's death a comrade wrote 'He was doing his job nobly and was always such good fellow'. Willam was originally buried in Janes Military Cemetery, a few miles to the north of Sarigol, exhumed and reburied in Sarigol Cemetery sometime during 1921-22.
