In memoriam
Giannis Tsarouchis (Piraeus, January 13, 1910 - Athens, July 20, 1989) was a Greek painter and stage designer. His first works were exhibited in 1929 in "Asylum of Art". His success led him to attend the High School of Fine Arts of the Technical University of Athens (1929 - 1935) with professors Jacobidis, Vikatos and Parthenis. At the same time, he studied at Kontoglou (1931 - 1934), who introduced him to Byzantine hagiography and studied folk architecture and attire. Together with Pikionis, Kontoglou and Ang. Hadjimichal pioneered the demand of Greek art for the time. In 1935-1936, after visiting Constantinople, he traveled to Paris and Italy. Visiting the various museums he came into contact with Renaissance and Impressionist creations as well as with contemporary artistic trends of his time. He discovered the work of Theophilus and met artists such as Matis and Jaskometti. In 1950 he returned to Paris where, one year later, in 1951, he exhibited in Paris and London at Retriever Gallery, and in 1953 he signed a contract with the Iola Gallery in New York. In 1956 he was a candidate for the Guggenheim Prize, and in 1958 he took part in the Venice Biennial. In 1967 he settled in Paris. In 1982 the Yannis Tsarouchis Museum was inaugurated in Maroussi, at the artist's home, which he himself turned into a museum, giving his personal collection of works. At the same time, the Tsarouchis Foundation operates in order to spread the work of the painter. He was a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts of Greece (EETS). Along with the painting, Yannis Tsarouchis also dealt with theatrical direction and even from 1928. He designed scenery and costumes for the theaters "National" ("Vasiliko"), "Kotopouli", "Primary" Piraeus and others. Especially prose, as well as the classic "Romeo and Juliet" which was published in 1954 in the Royal Garden. He is considered by the greatest modern Greek painters with international visibility and especially in France. At the same time, he worked as a stage designer in both Greek and foreign theaters with great success. This is due to the establishment, in almost all the scenes of Greek cinema filmed in popular centers, of the presence of the sailor in dance or not, even considered necessary. In 1977 he made the Trojan of Euripides himself in his own Modern Greek performance with his own teaching and stage design.
