In memoriam

Zijo Ismić, a prosperous garage owner, and his wife, Nera, approved of their eldest daughter's first serious boyfriend. At 25, she was the Muslim girl friend (they had been sweethearts since highschool) of Serb Boško Brkić. They were both shot trying to escape the seige in May of 1993, they died in each other arms -- their bodies lay in the street for 4 days. Their story is told by Kurt Schork , whose ashes are buried next to them. They are buried together under a heart shaped headstone. They were called "the Romeo and Juliet of Sarajevo" because they were different ethnic backgrounds who should have 'hated' each other, but instead they were in love.
