His age at Death was actually 29 1/2 not 28 as inscribed on his grave marker. BMD NZ 09/12/1911/20798 BMD NZ 02/06/1941/63866 On 15 June 1941, Albert was reported missing in Crete since 2 June 1941. He could have become missing during the evacuation of Crete, in the proceeding days. By the 1st of June, there were still 12,000 UK and ally troops still on Crete, after Germany's control commenced. Albert was buried in Grave 29 at Khania Cemetery in northern Crete. On 17 August 1945, Albert was re-interred at Suda Bay Cemetery in Plot 2, Row A, Grave No. 10. It wasn't until 3 December 1945, when a telegram was sent to Albert's mother in NZ, that she first heard of his death, four and a half years later. Until then she had not received any further update since hearing her son was missing, when she received the first telegram dated 17 June 1941.
