In memoriam

US Navy Veteran (1894-1919), Spanish American War and World War One. During the Spanish American War he was a seaman on USFS Olympia, flagship of Commodore George Dewey's seven-ship Asiatic Fleet, and at the Battle of Manila Bay on May 1, 1898. A native of Greece (what was then Turkey), he immigrated to the US in October 1888 and enlisted in the Navy on April 28, 1894. Per the 1900 Census he was attached to the USS Potomac. He became a naturalized US Citizen in 1909, and the Census the following year shows him attached to the Brooklyn Navy Yard. During World War 1 he was a boatswain's mate first class in the US Naval Reserve Force and retired in 1919. Sometime during the 1920s or 30s he returned to his native Greece, where he died in January 1944 at the age of 78.
