King of Yugoslavia. He was the younger son of King Petar I. He was declared Prince in 1909. Since 1914, he conducted royal duties instead of his old and ill father. Even then he showed his absolutistic pretensions. He was King of Yugoslavia from 1921 to 1934. During his reign, Alexander ruled as dictator. He declared the new constitution in 1921 under pressure against his ruling style. In 1922 he married Princess Marie of Romania, daughter of King Ferdinand I of Romania. King Aleksandar was assassinated in Marseilles together with French foreign minister Louis Barthou .
