Poet, columnist, food critic, lawyer, soldier. Pastorel was a Romanian humorist who worked in many genres. He is best known for his parody and epigrams. Rooted in Moldavian culture, he was an opinionated columnist, a famous wine-drinking bohemian and a decorated war hero. He received Romania's National Prize in 1937 at the peak of his career. He later became a World War II propagandist shunned by leftists, marginalized and supervised by the Communist regime. He spent 2 years in prison after arrest and prosecution by the Communist authorities, and died shortly after his release. Most of his work did not become accessible to readers until the 1989 Revolution.
