In memoriam
Australian War Memorial Alfred Charles Harrop Jackson was Melbourne born and attended Ballarat College. He was a 27-year-old clerk when he enlisted on September 2nd 1914. On October 21st he left Australia aboard the Orvieto bound for the battlefields of Europe. He served initially with the 5th Battalion but at Gallipoli in May 1915 he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant and transferred to the 6th Battalion. On August 8th he was wounded in action during an assault on German Officer's Trench near Lone Pine. He was evacuated to hospital at Mudros but died of his wounds on the following day, August 9th 1915. He is buried at East Mudros Military Cemetery and is commemorated on the honour board at Ballarat College.
