Anna Cavaletto was born on the island of Koločep, present-day Croatia, on 15 June 1838, according to her baptismal record. Her parents were Pietro Cavaletto, a fisherman, and Anna Boghetta. Koločep was also known as Calamotta during this time period. Anna married Domenico Toretich in Koločep on 26 September 1858. The couple had two children, Giovanni (1861) and Anna (1862-1866). Shortly after the birth of their second child, Anna died in Koločep on 13 Nov 1863 and was buried at Sv. Nikole. Sadly, Anna and Domenico's daughter Anna also died young, at the age of four, in 1866. Their son Giovanni (John) immigrated to the United States. While we don't know precisely what year he was naturalized, he was living in Astoria, Oregon, as of 1900 and returned to Koločep in 1907 to marry Anna Lujak. The couple moved to Seattle shortly thereafter, where he was a commercial fisherman. They had three children, John, Anna and Nicoletta (Nettie). John and Anna are buried at Calvary Cemetery in Seattle.
