He was a Roman Catholic clergyman of Austrian origin, who served as bishop of Iasi (1947-1951). He was arrested by the Securitate on June 26, 1949 and left to starve to death in Sighet prison. On May 17, 2014, he was beatified during a religious service officiated by Cardinal Angelo Amato in Iasi . [2] Bishop Anton Durcovici is celebrated in Romania on December 10 , the day of his martyrdom.
