NEW ZEALAND ENGINEERS SERJEANT ZIMAN A.M.
Sergeant, Service No. 20454, 7th Field Company, New Zealand Engineers Son of Ralph Lionel Ziman and of Myra Ziman (née Caselberg), of Auckland City, New Zealand. LAW STUDENT KILLED YOUNG AUCKLAND SERGEANT A son of Mr. and Mrs. R. L. Ziman, of 22 Wynyard Street, City, Sergeant Arthur Myer Ziman, who has been reported killed in action, was born in Auckland 23 years ago. He was educated at the Wellesley Street and Normal primary schools and at the Auckland Grammar School where he won the junior steeplechase on one occasion and established a junior record for the 880 yards event. Later he studied law at Auckland College, during which period he served in the First Field Company of the New Zealand Engineers. He enlisted in the Expeditionary Force shortly after the outbreak of war, leaving the Dominion with a company of engineers as a lance-sergeant. ---Auckland Star, June 5, 1942 Note: Died of severe wounds to the back while commanding a sub-unit that inflicted heavy casualties on paratroopers during intense fighting near the village of Modi, about 1.5 miles from the Maleme aerodrome, according to a letter to his parents from a friend, Capt. J.A. Ferguson, who briefly chatted with Arthur as he was being carried away on a stretcher (contained in probate docs).
