Little Greek Nobility. Daughter of a career soldier but well established in aristocratic circles, she married (1919) Alexander I of Greece, formerly Prince Oldenburg, becoming, by royal decree, Princess Consort of Greece and Denmark. Her life as ruler was short-lived and had an unpleasant start. In fact, her marriage with the king, who died prematurely in 1920, was not accepted favorably by the population and by the Greek aristocracy, so much so as to force her to flee temporarily to France. However Aspasia is considered by historians to be the only royal character of the Gluksburg dynasty of pure Greek descent. Upon her death, her remains were initially buried in the cemetery of the Venetian island of San Michele.
