August Maglievaz was born in Lussinpiccolo, Austria (now Mali Losinj, Croatia) in 1912. He emigrated to the United States in 1931 and settled in the New York City area. In 1942, he joined the US Army. He would eventually see action in the jungle of New Guinea and gave his life defending our country on the Island of Morotai, Indonesia on October 8, 1944. He left behind his wife, Gloria (Slocum) Maglievaz, two sons and a daughter.
