American philologist, archeologist. Augustus Chapman Merriam was born on May 30, 1843 in “Locust Grove,” Leyden, New York, United States. Son of Ela and Lydia (Sheldon) Merriam. Married Louise Oley, July 23, 1869. Education: Graduate Columbia, 1866. Career: Teacher, Columbia Grammar School, New York City, circa 1867. Tutor Greek & Latin, Columbia College, New York City, 1868-1876, Adjunct Professor Greek, 1880, professor Greek archaeology and epigraphy, 1890. President American Philological Association, 1886-1887. Became director American School Classical Studies, Athens, Greece, 1886. Made successful excavations at Sicyon and Dionyso, found birthplace of Thespis (founder Greek tragedy), 1887-1888. President New York Society of Archaeological Institute American, 1891-1894. Author: The Phaeacian Episode of the Odyssey, 1880. The Greek and Latin Inscriptions on the Obelisk-Crab in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, 1884. The Sixth and Seventh Books of Herodotus, 1885. Classical Studies in Honor of Henry Drisler, 1894.
