Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment)

Private Augustus George Evans, MM, joined the 1st Battalion Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) in January 1939 and the Special Boat Section (SBS) in 1943/44. In November 1942 he was awarded the Military Medal (MM) for “gallant and distinguished services in the field”. He was one of the Alimnia Patrol of the SBS who were captured on 7th April 1944, and later executed, along with three seamen of the Royal Hellenic Navy who accompanied them. In 1981 a memorial plaque was dedicated to them is St Paul’s Anglican Church, Athens.
