In memoriam

Military Figure. He gained recognition as a colonel of the Army of Bosnia and Herzegovina and commander of the defense of Žepa during the War in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He was part of the entire 40-month-long siege. He was captured and, sometime after the fall of Žepa in 1995, was killed. The documentation was poor. His remains, along with eight other men, were located in a mass grave in November of 2001. After three attempts using DNA, his remains were finally identified with positive DNA results in 2009, solving a 14-year-long case of the International Commission for Missing Persons. He had been executed with a gunshot to the head. Amnesty International is seriously concerned about the continuing impunity for enforced disappearances and other violations of human rights and international humanitarian law committed during the war. He was buried with honors in the cemetery of Ali Pasha's Mosque in Sarajevo. After graduating from the Yugoslav Military Academy and the University of Sarajevo, he was a high school teacher before the war and was married with two daughters. According to newspaper articles, on the anniversary of his capture, he will be remembered as a national hero and a patriot who gave his life for his homeland.
