Baldo Lujak

Baldo (Baldasarre) Lujak was a sea captain from Koločep, present-day Croatia. He was born on the island in 1832 and was the son of Mate Lujak and Kate Poković, according to his death record. He married Nike Svilokos (Nicoletta Svilocassi) on 3 Jan 1866, according to Koločep marriage records. The parish's baptismal books also show that the couple had six children on the island: Matteo (1866), Catterina Domenica (1868), Vincenzo (1872), Paola (1874), Pietro (1876), and Anna (1878). Baldo's death record states that he died 4 Mar 1911 and was buried at the cemetery at Sv. Nikole in Koločep. The online parish register for Koločep lists deaths on the island only until 1918, and there is no record of his wife's death in those records. So, I am unable to add a memorial for his wife, Nike, since we do not know where or when she passed away. [Note: On 11 April 1907, Baldo and Nike's daughter Anna married in Koločep to John Toretich, who was also born there. Anna and John had a family in Seattle Washington, USA, where they were also buried. While Nike's name is written incorrectly in Anna's Washington State death record as "Anna Zakonita", Baldo's is correct. Both Anna's baptism and marriage records list Baldo and Nike as her parents. Anna's DOB on her death record matches that on her baptismal and marriage records. So, Zakonita was clearly a mistake. [Zakonita means "legal" in Croatian. The word can be used to describe whether a child was "legitimate" (zakonita) or whether a woman is the legal wife of a man.
