He is best remembered for his contribution to Bucharest's urban and cultural heritage through the donation of land that became Bellu Cemetery , the most renowned burial ground in Romania. Barbu Bellio , born in May 1825 in Bucharest, was the son of Alexandru Bellu , a prominent high-ranking official (logofăt), and Irina Văcărescu , the daughter of the distinguished great Ban Barbu Văcărescu . A descendant of George Bellio, a Macedonian noble, Barbu inherited his aristocratic title through his paternal lineage. His noble status was further solidified in 1866 when it was reaffirmed by the imperial court of Franz Josef, continuing a recognition originally bestowed upon a relative. Bellu's marriage resulted in one son, also named Barbu. His education took him to Athens, Greece, where he completed his studies before returning to Romania in 1850.
