In memoriam

Roman Catholic Cardinal. He served as the Archbishop of the Diocese of Boston, Massachusetts from 1984 until 2001. At one time a high-ranking Cardinal. he was profiled during the height of the sex scandal which plagued the Catholic Church, for which led to his resignation in 2001. His father was an United States Army colonel, his mother was a concert pianist, Law was raised on numerous Latin American military bases and later resided in several states, prior to settling in the United States Virgin Islands, from where he graduated high school. He attained a degree in History from Harvard University and following his desire to pursue the priesthood, he was ordained in 1961. His initial post was to serve in Natchez, Mississippi, and during the 1960s, Law became a passionate proponent of Civil Rights. In 1968, he was assigned to serve as executive director of the American Bishops' Committee on Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs in Washington D.C. In 1973, he became Bishop of the Diocese of Springfield-Cape Girardeau in Southern Missouri. In 1984, he succeeded Cardinal Humberto Medeiros as the head of the Archdiocese of Boston, Massachusetts. One year later (1985), he was elevated to Cardinal by Pope John Paul II . In 2001, Law was pressured to resign after it became known of the child molestation charges within the church and his failure to take action against the priests.
