Blaž Horvat

In memoriam

Blaž Horvat was born 1 February 1868 in Selnik, a small village just north of Ludbreg in Croatia. Blaž was the fourth child of Imbro and Bara Horvat. Blaž was likely named after his grandfather; he grew up and worked on a farm in Selnik. Blaž met Verona Grabarić in Selnik when he was 23 and she was 19. They married in 1891 at the local Church of St. Antun (Sveti Antun Padovanski). Blaž and Verona had 9 children together: Ivan: 1892-1954, Gjuro (George): 1896-1927, Franca: 1899-1927, Marija: 1900-1903, Katica: 1901-1944, Josipa: 1903-1905, Stjepan: 1906-1987, Vinko: 1911-1982, and Ana: 1914-1915. Sadly, Verona died in childbirth in 1916. With 5 children still at home, Blaž (now 49) decided to marry 41 year old widow Ana Lomina Šmer in 1917. Blaž and Ana survived the extreme difficulties of raising a large family during two subsequent world wars directly affecting their country. Blaž died 1 February 1951 in Selnik at the age of 83.
