Church of the Holy Savior
Church of the Holy Savior
Located near the Kale (or Skopje Fortress), The Church of the Holy Savior was believed to date from the 17th century, but Skopje's 1963 earthquake revealed evidence that it actually dates from the 16th. Its 19th century 6 by 10 meter walnut iconostasis combines a profusion of plant and animal motifs with figures of saints in local costumes. This high-relief carving was the work of craftsmen from the Debar area, and is one of Macedonia's finest examples of traditional woodcarving.
