Gakowa was a dreaded death camp where many thousands of innocent German Danube Swabians lost their lives. It was located in the north of Yugoslavia near the Hungarian border and was in operation from March 1945 until January of 1948. As many as 20,000 people were contained in Gakowa and at times 75 to 100 died in a day. The casualties amounted to over 8,500.
