Italian Ossuary
Italian Ossuary
Located in Kobarid (Ital. Caporetto), about 80 km WNW of Ljubljana. Location incorrectly entered as "Ljubljana" because there was no other possible choice on the website. This ossuary contains the remains of 7,760 Italian soldiers (including 2,748 unknown) that fell in the First World War in Slovenia. They were reinterred here from military cemeteries in the Upper Soèa Valley (in Drežnica, Drežniške Ravne, Gabrje, Kamno, Smast, and Bovec). The ossuary was designed by the architect Giovanni Greppi, with sculpture by Giannino Castiglioni. The ceremonial dedication of the ossuary took place on 18 Septembra 1938 in the presence of Benito Mussolini.
