Leper Colony Cemetery
Leper Colony Cemetery
The Leper Colony Cemetery is one of the two cemeteries on Spinalonga Island. It was created primarily for the ostracized lepers of Crete and mainland Greece, and the graves are unmarked. A sign erected in 2013 reads: "In this place of compulsory confinement, hundreds of our fellow human beings struck by leprosy gave up all of their hopes for life. From their lives, we learn lessons. Their memory is eternal. The Panhellenic Association of Leprosy."
