Monument to the Unknown Soldier
This memorial was dedicated on September 22, 1981, as a monument to all Bulgarian soldiers who died for their country. It is located next to the 6th century Hagia Sophia Church (Church of St. Sophia), on 2 Paris Street. Hagia Sophia is the second oldest church in the city and in the 14th century, it gave its name to the city, previously known as Sredets (Средец). The Monument to the Unknown Soldier is the location where the President of Bulgaria and foreign dignitaries perform ceremonies honoring the fallen Bulgarian soldiers.
