Monument to the Victims of the Raid
Monument to the Victims of the Raid
The four-meter tall Monument to the Victims of the Raid, also called "The Family," was built in 1971 in honor of the 3,000-4,000 mostly Serb, Romani and Jewish civilians who were massacred by Hungarian troops in Hungarian-occupied Bačka on January 1942 after the Axis invasion and partition of Yugoslavia. The sculptor Jovan Soldatović, who built the monument, also created 78 bronze plates which were added to the memorial in 1992. Four of the plates tell the story of this tragic event in Serbian and Hebrew while the other 66 plates hold the names of the victims. The memorial is highly regarded as a cultural heritage site of great importance.
