Sajmiste Concentration Camp Memorial
Sajmiste Concentration Camp Memorial
Also known as Zemen Camp/Semlin Judenlager. In the fall on 1941, the Germans occupying Yugoslavia established a Concentration Camp on the grounds of a former fairground known as Zemun/Sajmiste, outside Belgrade. It was located on the left bank of Sava river, and was then under the control of Independent State of Croatia. Croatian authorities collaborated with the Germans to establish this camp. The majority of Serbian Jews were killed here. Most Jews from Kosovo (Kosovska Mitrovica) were deported here to be murdered. 8,000 Jews, mostly women, children, and the elderly were interned there. Between March and May, 1942, 6,000 Jews were killed at Sajmiste using gas vans. Another 1,200 Jews died there of exposure and starvation.
