Private Byrne, aged 35, died while defending the island of Crete against the German land and airborne invasion on 29 May 1941. He was the son of George William and Anne Margaret Byrne, and the husband of Ellen Dorothy Byrne, of Rainbow, Vic. He is commemorated on the Athens Memorial Face 11.
