Charles Short

In memoriam

Charles Short (also on Wortwell memorial) born at Bungay 22nd February 1888. He was baptised on 18th April 1888 at the Wesleyan-Methodist chapel, Bungay. Son of William and Susan. On the 1901 census William who was born in Birmingham, has retired from the army and the family lives at Broad Street, Bungay, the town where Susan was born. By 1911 they are living at High Road, Wortwell and William is working as a farm labourer. By this time Charles is a Gunner with No 8 Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery, based in India. He married Beatrice Short, and they lived at 59, Sheringham Avenue, Manor Park, London. Gunner 30828, 7th Mountain Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. He enlisted at Gt. Yarmouth. He died 3rd October 1918 in Salonika, Greece, aged 30. He was buried at Kirechkoi-Hortakoi Military Cemetery, Thessaloniki, Greece. Plot 224. Charles is commemorated on the Harleston War Memorial.
