MALTBY Charles William , 1569146, Gunner, Royal Artillery, 82 Bty., 25 Lt. A.A. Regt. Son of C. W. Maltby and of Alice Maltby, of Boston, Lincolnshire. Presumed killed in action 14th April 1941 aged 28, commemorated Face 2, ATHENS MEMORIAL / Boston W M Further news of the death in action has been received by his family, A telegram early last month announced that Gunner Charles William Maltby, son of Mrs A, Barton and the late Able Seaman Charles William Maltby, of 8, Bedford Place, Boston had been killed in the Middle East. Last week Mrs Barton received a letter of sympathy from their Majesties the King and Queen, and also a letter of sympathy from the military authorities, Sometime after the telegram, Mrs Barton received a letter from her son evidently posted before the tragedy. In this Gunner Maltby stated that he was some thirty miles into the desert. He was formerly a driver but on arriving at his Eastern destination he was transferred to gunnery, In his 10 months of service he received one leave of seven of seven days. In civil life, he carried on the business on his own account as a riddlemaker and wire worker. In addition to his mother, he leaves his step-father, Mr. William Barton, two sisters, Mrs. M. Curtis and Miss K. Maltby, and one step-sister, Miss B, Barton, A memorial service is be held in St. James Church on Sunday evening.
