Christos E. Xanthopoulos-Palamas

In memoriam

Greek name: Χρήστος Ξανθόπουλος - Παλαμάς Politician and diplomat. He entered the diplomatic corps, achieving an important career. In 1941 he resigned from the diplomatic corps, and was recalled in 1944. He was secretary of the Embassy of Greece in France, Secretary of the Greek delegation to the League of Nations ( 1931), Director of Economic Affairs at the Foreign Ministry, and Representative of Greece to the United Nations, Director General of the Foreign Ministry (1960 - 1962) and Permanent Representative of Greece to NATO (1962 - 1964). Between 1967 and 1970 he served as Greek Ambassador to Washington. On 6th January 1964, he took over the ministry of foreign affairs at the Paraskevopoulos transitional government, which resigned on 19th February of the same year. On 21st July 1970 he was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister in the dictatorial government of Georgios Papadopoulos to become a Deputy Foreign Secretary. Eventually he remained until 11th September 1972. In the Markezini government he was appointed Foreign Secretary. As Foreign Secretary, he promoted a policy of rapprochement with the communist countries. Also he established the prize of Christos and Eleni Xanthopoulou - Palamas of the Academy of Athens. His wife was a benefactor of the Academy of Athens. He also authored the “Diplomatic Triptych”, et al. He died in Vienna at the age of 72 and was buried in the First Cemetery of Athens.
